To pay your I-901 SEVIS fee through Western Union, whether you go yourself or we go for you, you first need a coupon. You get it by filling in Form I-901 on the official site, fmjfee.com. It's free, takes about 15 minutes, and the coupon carries your SEVIS ID, so the payment lands on your record.
Before you start
- Have your Form I-20 (F-1 or M-1 student) or Form DS-2019 (J-1 exchange visitor) in front of you.
- Find your SEVIS ID. It's printed on the form and starts with the letter N.
- If you were admitted to more than one school, use the form from the school or programme you will actually attend. The payment is tied to that SEVIS ID.
- Check with your school or sponsor that they haven't already paid the fee for you. Some do.
Step by step
Step 1: Open fmjfee.com and tap "Pay I-901 Fee"
Go to www.fmjfee.com, the official I-901 site run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Avoid look-alike sites. At the top of the page, tap PAY I-901 FEE.
Step 2: Fill in the four boxes, then tap Submit
Copy each one exactly as it is on your I-20 or DS-2019. The numbers match the picture.
- SEVIS ID: printed near the top of the first page of your I-20 or DS-2019. It starts with the letter N. Copy every digit.
- Last Name: your surname.
- Given Name: your first name and any middle names, in the same order as on the form.
- Date of Birth: pick the month, then the day, then the year.
Step 3: Check your details and the rest of the form
The site finds your record from your SEVIS ID and asks for the rest of Form I-901, such as your address and your school or programme. Fill it in, then read everything on the summary page before you go on. A wrong SEVIS ID causes the most trouble later.
Step 4: Choose Western Union Quick Pay
At the payment step, choose Western Union Quick Pay. Don't choose card if you plan to pay through Western Union or through us.
Step 5: Save your coupon
The site shows your payment coupon with a coupon number. Save it as a PDF, or take a clear screenshot that shows the whole coupon.
Mistakes to avoid
- Typos in your SEVIS ID. The payment is matched to that number. Copy it carefully from your form.
- Paying twice. Once your coupon is paid, don't also pay by card. ICE refunds a duplicate payment only if you ask within 90 days.
- Using an old form. If your school issues a new I-20 with a different SEVIS ID, the SEVIS ID on your payment must match the newest one.
- Leaving it late. ICE advises allowing at least three business days for a payment to be received and verified before your visa interview.
